WSA GANG PROGRAM - DAILY SCHEDULE

The WSA GANG (ages 20 - 30) program has been developed from the input that GANG participants provided at the 2011 workshop in San Antonio, TX.  With on-site direction provided by WSA members, Kathy LaRoche & Terri Schonfeld, the program consists of educational sessions, and off-site activities.   The program requires pre-registration and a separate fee. 

*Please Note:  Optional evening activities (noted with an *) listed below are for your information only.  They are NOT included as part of the WSA GANG program.  You must register for these events separately and attend with family members.
 

TUESDAY, July 3, 2012

1 - 2:30 PM      OPENING KEYNOTE         The Magic of YOU!      David Hira
Did you know that you are special and incredible beyond your imagination? Magician David Hira will enthrall you with both his magic and his perspective on the miracle that is YOU. You will laugh, be amazed, and in the end you will appreciate not only who you are but learn to better appreciate everyone that is around you. It's the "feel good" beginning of a great conference. Don't miss it!

1:30 - 2:30 PM    CHORUS (optional - pre-registration required)
If you are a teen or adult, and love to sing, you are invited to join us in a special choral group, which promises to be very exciting, and a great team learning experience . We will practice some really cool songs, which we will then perform at the Convention! Linda Lara, past choral conductor from many Williams’ camps, including Belvoir Terrace MA, and Whispering Trails in Grand Rapids Michigan, will be leading the Chorus, assisted by Jacquelyn Marston.

Words to the songs will be sent out to you in advance, and we hope to send along mp3 files so that you all can get familiar with the music.  Some of the songs we will practice include:
The Star Spangled Banner (Key), The Climb (sung by Miley Cyrus) , The Colors of America (Gallina), and All Over the World (Donnelly/Strid).

We hope to have a large group, which will help make a strong and beautiful sound! (Please note that the chorus will practice during “on-site” convention programming – you will have to miss a class to participate but you won’t miss any scheduled trips.  You must be willing to attend every practice to participate.)

3:00 - 5:30 PM    Trolley & Duck Boat Tour of Boston
Super Duck Tours focus on the history of Boston’s waterfront and splash into Boston Harbor.  You’ll spend 45 minutes on land and 45 minutes at sea with spectacular views
of the Old North Church, Bunker Hill Monument, USS Constitution and the Boston skyline.

WEDNESDAY: July 4, 2012

8:30 - 9:00 AM    WELCOME & Split into 3 Groups         Kathy and Terri

9 – 12:15  PM          Building & Maintaining Relationships
The 3 groups will change rooms each hour between 9 and Noon, so that each group participates in each session listed below.

Healthy Relationships:         Sara Miranda
What to look for- the red flags signifying potential exploitation and abuse-and strategies for prevention and intervention. Both friendships and romantic relationships will be included.

Dating Readiness:                Andrea Franz
Are you ready to date and how do you feel about it, acceptable dating practices, & uncomfortable dating situations and how to handle them (what to do when “he/she likes you and you don't like him", and much more).

Relationships, Romance, and Sexuality:               Matthew Westra
An open discussion, with question and answers, about relationships, love, sexuality, getting together and breaking up, etc. The WSA Gang will have an opportunity to get some direct and frank answers to their questions and concerns.

Watch the documentary that captured the hearts of many at the Thessaloniki Documentary Film Festival and the Special Olympics World Games in Athens. Producer Jon Kent will be on hand to take questions following the film.

6:00 – 8:00 PM       Howl at the Moon  (optional – pre-registration & add’l fee required)
Join us for an interactive, dueling Pianos, Sing-a-long at this local night spot. The “bar” will belong to WSA folks and dinner is included in the price. (WSA "Celebration" performers will leave early to get ready for the 8:00 event at the Sheraton).

8:00 – 11:00 PM       *July 4th Celebration Concert & Dance (optional – pre-registration & add’l fee required)
Live music provided by adults with WS, snacks and the fireworks on the big screen.

 

THURSDAY - July 5, 2012

9:00 - 10:00 AM       Getting ready to live on your own       
Many of us want to live outside our parent’s home. How can we prepare? This session will provide guidelines for the skills you need to master, how to know when you are ready for the move, and the type of living opportunity that will be best for you.

9:00 - 10:00 AM       Chorus (optional, pre-registration required)

10:30 – 12:30 PM          Fenway Park Tour
Exercise and fun combined! The group will walk down to Fenway Park and tour the home of the Boston Red Sox. (Did you know that a young adult with WS sang the national anthem at Fenway?) Traditional ballpark lunch (dogs, chips & beverage) will be provided.

1:00 – 4:00 PM             Blue Man Group

7:00 – 10:00 PM           *Wedding Reception & DJ Dance (optional – pre-registration required)
Join WSA staff member, Kate Gardner & her fiancee, Adam Mader at a dessert reception following their private ceremony. (cake cutting, bouquet toss & first dance included!) Dance the night away to great music provided by one of Boston's top DJs. 

FRIDAY - July 6, 2012

A.     Zumba

Take a class in the latest exercise craze -  a little bit Salsa, a little bit aerobics and a whole lot of fun.
B.     Self Defense

Self defense is more than punching, blocking, and kicking. This class will introduce you to effective self-defense skills and show you how you can raise your quality of life with self defense techniques.

A.     Tour of  Ladder Company 15, Fire Station

This firehouse was opened on February 20, 1888 when Engine Company 33 and Ladder Company 15 were organized in this new firehouse. Engine 33 and Ladder 15 have remained here, excluding several periods of interior renovation, since 1888.

B.     Make Up & other Beauty tips
Representatives from Mary Kay will be on hand to provide tips and tricks aimed at helping you look your best every day.

LUNCH ON YOUR OWN

1:00 - 3:15 PM         IMPROV!
Spend the afternoon learning from the best! The Improv Asylum young adult training course is designed to help students build confidence, strengthen communication skills, and develop unique comedic voices. Students will practice creating scenes through group exercises & two-person scene work. During the breakout sessions the students will learn among peers, forge friendships and grow as performers. Following the training, the instructors will share all of the skills just learned in a unique "on stage" performance

3:30 - 4:30 PM         Prudential Skywalk Tour 
See Boston from the highest vantage point! The Prudential Skywalk Observatory is on the 50th floor, offering spectacular 360 degree views of the city, Acoustiguide Audio Tour, Dreams of Freedom Museum, Multimedia Theater and the Skywalk's Gift Shop. On a clear day you can see the beaches of Cape Cod to the south, or mountains in New Hampshire to the north.

Special music presentations by the teen & adult chorus and school age campers; 30 year awards; dinner and dancing to the live music of the WSA Music Camp Instructors

SATURDAY - July 7, 2012

9:00-11:00 AM          Managing the technology in your life: Internet Safety, APPS to fit your lifestyle & help organize your life, Posting Appropriately on Social Media Sites and more.
We are all spending more and more time on the internet via lap tops, iPads and Phones. In this session you will learn about the importance of internet safety, and etiquette (especially with your friends on the WSA GANG & DT facebook pages). In part 2 of the morning session we talk about everyone’s interests and daily challenges and learn how to find APPS that can help.

11:15 – Noon           Closing Conversation
Location & topics for the 2013 WSA GANG Workshop will be discussed.
